Reinterpretation - Art Craft

Reinterpretation is a project in which I explored unusual materials and reconstructed them into something totally different

Inspirations: My inspirations for this project came from Kate Cusack's Zipper Jewelries.  I was inspired by her idea of finding extraordinary beauty in ordinary objects. For this project, I explored and reinterpreted the pre-determined purposes of the ordinary materials:  women's bra cups, kitchen scourers, lightbulb, and screw nuts. The finished products are presented as "the clutch,"  "the necklace," and "the hat."

The Clutch: t the beginning, I didn't know what to make, so I wondered around a couple of trim stores for hours, just to play with different materials, and then I saw a shelf that is selling bra cups. A moment of "ah-ha" occurred to me and I realized that the two bra cups can form a sort of enclosure. Playing with different materials and reflecting on their colors, structures, textures etc. was an important step for me in the conceptualization phrase.

This was my first time sawing. At first I sawed two bra cups together and then tried to switch the zipper on the top. Only until then did I realize that there was no opening for the needle to go through, so I had to restart everything. After the zipper was done, I sawed a chain through the bra cups to make it a clutch.

Final Product:

The hat: When I ran into a dollar store, I saw these kitchen scourers that have very interesting shapes and beautiful metallic colors. I played with different shapes of kitchen scourers to get some inspirations of what I would like to make out of them.

I decided to make the kitchen scourer into a hair accessory. I cut the top of the kitchen scourer to make it into a shape of flower. A lining was sawed onto the hat, and a hair clip was sawed on the bottom of the hat. As the last step, the kitchen scourer was glued onto the top of the hat.

Final Product:

The necklace: I was intrigued by hardware parts' metallic color and interested to see what it would look like if I combine hardware parts with jewelries. The lightbulb does not have holes through which I can put a chain, so I had to improvise to wire wrap the lightbulb to make a loop for the chain.
